When Mabel Heitmeier began her journey as a KonMari Consultant in 2019, she couldn’t have imagined the transformative path it would take her on. What started with an audiobook, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo, has blossomed into a successful professional organizing business, Spark Joy in MI. As a Certified Master—a title awarded to only the most experienced Consultants—Mabel continues to inspire others through her work. I had the privilege of interviewing Mabel to uncover the heart of her career, her insights, and her aspirations for the future.
How It All Began
Hitomi Kornilov: How did you first learn about becoming a KonMari Consultant?
Mabel Heitmeier: I first learned about it through The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. One section of the book mentioned becoming a Consultant, and I was instantly intrigued. I did some online research and discovered the nearest Consultant was based in Detroit. I reached out to her to gain a better understanding of the career, and the rest is history.
The Path to Certification
HK: What steps did you take to become certified?
MH: There were many! First, I read Marie Kondo’s books, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and Spark Joy. Then I used the KonMari Method to tidy my own home, submitting photos to prove that every space sparked joy. Next, I attended the KonMari Consultant Program in New York with a friend. From there, I conducted practice sessions with clients and submitted detailed reports. Finally, I passed a rigorous multiple-choice exam and completed an interview with the KonMari Team.
HK: How has the process changed since you started?
MH: Two main changes stand out: the Consultant Program is now offered virtually, and virtual sessions with practice clients count toward certification hours. These adjustments have made the process more accessible.
Finding Joy in the Work
HK: What is your level of satisfaction with this career?
MH: I’m deeply fulfilled. I feel I am following God’s calling, and it’s incredibly meaningful to see the positive impact my work has on my clients’ lives.
HK: What do you find most rewarding?
MH: Witnessing clients’ transformations and knowing that I’ve helped them create a home that truly sparks joy.
Challenges and Opportunities
HK: What challenges have you encountered?
MH: One challenge is the unpredictability of income as a solo entrepreneur. Another is the reliance on technology—my clients often find me through Google, so maintaining an online presence is crucial.
HK: Are there opportunities for advancement in this field?
MH: Absolutely. I’m particularly interested in exploring business-to-business services. While I currently focus on individuals and families, there’s significant potential to expand into supporting companies.
Balancing Work and Life
HK: How does your career fit your family and personal life?
MH: Perfectly. I believe in defining an ideal lifestyle first and shaping my career around it. This intentionality has allowed me to create harmony between my work and home life.
HK: Have you encountered any conflicts between work and personal responsibilities?MH: Not personally, though I know some colleagues find tidying sessions physically and mentally draining. I’m intentional about planning my day to ensure I have energy for both work and home responsibilities.
Looking Ahead
HK: What does the future look like for you in this career?
MH: The word that comes to mind is joy. My work brings me immense joy, and my prayer is to spark joy in my clients’ lives, one home at a time.
HK: How has the field evolved?
MH: The KonMari Consultant community has grown significantly. Additionally, changes in Marie Kondo’s life often ripple into the field. For example, when she launched an online store, it sparked discussions about balancing decluttering with consumerism. These shifts bring new challenges and opportunities.

HK: What advice would you give to someone considering this career?
MH: Start by envisioning your ideal lifestyle. A clear vision will help you determine whether this career aligns with your goals and values.
